    The chines towards the bow will do most of the work in deflecting the water away from the hull, while the flat surfaces further aft generate the extra lift to help the boat onto the plane and stabilise the hull. Because the chines are located low on bottom, they help to prevent the hull from heeling over. If it heels, the flat surface of the chines becomes an inverted vee and this generates even more lift on the down side of the hull so stability is assured. This stabilising effect, combined with the deflection of the water cleanly away from the hull to reduce the frictional resistance, makes a significant improvement to the performance of the hull.

    A few hulls have just one step but most modern production hulls use two steps. A hull without steps, such as a conventional deep vee, will ride on the planing surfaces extending forward from the transom at speed. This means that it is riding on planing surfaces that revolve around this single pivot point at the transom. When steps are fitted the planing surfaces are divided up into two or more areas so that there is much less focus on a single pivot point. This means that a stepped hull will be less prone to pitching and will tend to have a more level ride, which in turn improves the efficiency.

    The flaps are normally hydraulically operated by switches or a joystick lever on the dashboard and they are used to adjust the trim of the boat. By angling the flaps downwards, they change the flow of the water under the transom and generate a lifting effect. If you put both flaps down, the transom will lift evenly and effectively when the bow is lowered. You might want to do this on a heavily laden boat when it’s coming onto the plane to generate extra lift to compensate for the extra weight. On many earlier surface-drive systems you had to use the flaps to get the boat onto the plane by generating extra lift.
