There will be local areas where the lines are temporarily closer together or wider apart and this is likely to cause increases or decreases in the general wind strength. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE ISOBARS CAN OFTEN VARY CONSIDERABLY IN QUITE LOCAL AREAS, LEADING TO LOCAL CHANGES IN WIND STRENGTH. 18 WHEN THE AIRFLOW IS BROKEN It is not too difficult to picture what happens when the regular flow of air generated by the wind encounters something in its path. There is no visible evidence of the turbulence that can be generated by the interruption in flow (unless it is affecting clouds, and even then it is relatively slow motion), but it can have a significant effect on local weather conditions.

In a weather situation that is changing quite rapidly, such as when a front is passing through or when fog is forecast, the report from the coast station could provide a very useful update and help to put some timing on the changes. However, use this type of information with caution. The report of the weather being experienced at the coast station may not reflect the general conditions prevailing out at sea. There can be two reasons for this; the first would simply be natural caution on the part of the reporter to exaggerate the weather conditions so that they cannot be accused of giving a misleading report.

On the actual presentation on the TV, these tend to be shown too quickly for you to have time to study them in order to get a good picture of what the weather patterns are doing. If you have the facilities, record TV forecasts on video or DVD – this will allow you to play them back in slow motion in your own time and get a really good picture of the weather movements that are forecast. Remember, however, that TV forecasts tend to relate more to what is happening over the land than to conditions at sea, and many of the TV forecasts have given up showing the isobars and replaced them with fancy weather graphics, which will not always serve your purpose for a sea forecast.
