To be sure, understanding the problems for women with respect to protection and treatment for HIV/AIDS is a long way from transforming their conditions. Many of the problems discussed in the following pages are so well known that they 16 Introduction can engender hopelessness and consequent neglect because solutions are not clearly on the horizon. The main aim of this research is to highlight not only the difficulties inherent in women’s lives but also ways in which possibilities for people to transform their situations might emerge.

Much of the scholarly work in anthropology of this decade is devoted to analyzing the local community in the context of these global transformations (Appadurai 1998; Friedman 2005; Schneider and Susser 2003). Authors in Wounded Cities (Schneider and Susser 2003) documented the ongoing processes of destruction and reconstruction that have characterized cities around the world in the era of globalization. In each case, from Beirut, Lebanon (Sawalha 2003) to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (Chae 2003) to Palermo and New York City (Harvey 2005; Mulling 2003; Susser and Schneider 2003), contributors demonstrated the ways in which the reconstruction processes, based on neoliberal priorities, led to the exclusion of the city’s poor and the exacerbation of the problems of housing, health, and education facing the urban working class.
