Emanating from deceit, it produces deceit, as Humility has begun as a reaction to the Cruelty whose sadism appears in its use of the ‘foot’.

467–8, K. 163, 467) In these three poems, the worm finds its way to a crimson bed; the friend steals the apple; and the serpent forces his way into the shrine. Each transgresses within the spaces of the bed, the garden and the shrine, transgression generating action. Poison links these texts, as does the power of attraction (the rose, the apple, the chapel) which is meretricious like the attractions of the commodity in capitalism. In the first poem, 20 Blake’s Night Thoughts poison appears through the trace of sickness in the rose; the second has poison in the ‘apple bright’; and in the third, the serpent vomits its poison out.
