Here I have given a broadly typical description.

It is a never-ending road because to be modern means to continually strive for the next big thing, the next advancement, the newest technology. To be modern is an elusive, unattainable goal that in early twentieth-century China was entwined with foreign influence. Because of China’s recent humiliations at the hands of Western powers, many Chinese were ambivalent about what kinds of ideas and inventions to take from the West, which many considered to be the font of modernity.

82 The medicalization of childbirth was only beginning to take place in the early twentieth century, even in the West, and so ideas about hospital births and antenatal care were not widespread or even considered necessary. Specialized and systematic midwifery training was limited, and it did not commence in China until the late 1920s with the advent of a modern public health system and greater importance placed on maternal and child health. Furthermore, women rarely wrote about childbirth, and certainly not about the majority of routine, uncomplicated birth stories.
