The resolution of the paradox of the Benoni consists, therefore, in arguing that present tense sentences should be analyzed on a par with compound tenses. In both, the Benoni verb is a participle and an auxiliary is present in the structure. There are both analytic and synthetic past and future tense structures in Hebrew. The language disposes of both a "simple" and a "complex" or periphrastic structure for these two tenses. The present tense, however, can only be syntactically expressed through the complex construction, there being no "simple" present in Hebrew.
