The results in Fig. 4 also demonstrate that rinsing sapwood sections in excess (pure) water significantly reduces the wettability of the lumen walls, an observation which at first seems counterintuitive. This behaviour can be attributed to the presence of hygroscopic residues of sap solutes on the lumen walls, deposited during the drainage/evaporation of sap.
