There can be little doubt that the drive for Nonconformist civil rights, education reform, disestablishment in England, Ireland, and Wales, as well as the sharp Nonconformist anti-clericalism contributed to the emergence of a secular society, but it is a highly questionable proposition to see such a society as the goal of the Nonconformists. At the time, many Victorian Christians conceived secular solutions as a device to realize distinctly religious goals and indeed to Christianize the nation.

When delivered in 1874 to the British Association for the Advancement of Science, this address gave Tyndall a lifelong reputation as a thoroughgoing materialist and stirred an enormous Victorian controversy over the alleged materialism of science. 32 Their analysis of the early years of the British Association for the Advancement of Science demonstrated two important points. First, most of the early leaders of Victorian science did sincerely believe the various arguments associated with natural religion.
