An idea as a word must be spoken or written, but once embodied, it requires controversy and contradiction. The word, as distinct from the that-which-is-before-one as an image, is a scene that surrounds, a place in time and duration, which shifts like the Heraclitean flux. A sound heard requires, almost with gravitational necessity, a turn of the head, a movement to fix and to locate, to focus with an image. The word, by contrast, opens the individual up to a community existing in time and duration and to a sense of destiny as process.

The image moves to the real; the word attempts the true. They are two radically different sides of what can never be the same question. The true and the real can only be double-edged. The image evokes the world of the certaina realitya that-which-is-before-one; it is personal but at the same time objective. It can also be before others. The view outside a window is available to all in principle but not exactly as it is available to any one personal view. One may see the same tree as an other, but the actual fact of seeing is personal and private, although it is an experience, nonetheless, of a certain.

For Florman, these distractions are presumed values, which, as values, affirm Ellul's point: the modern citizen loses the capacity to choose value apart from those provided by technique. Of further interest in uncovering the presumptions of Ellul's critics is Florman's view of the primitives who, like the office workers, are happy at their tasks. Technology has always been with us, he argues, improving our lives in its advance. The primitive world is presumed to be identical in principle to the modern world.
